The “Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana” is a flagship scheme of the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India. Under this scheme, dedicated outlets known as Janaushadhi Kendras are opened to provide generic medicines. In 2014 we have only 80 janaushadhi Kendra across the country. Prices of the Jan Aushadhi medicines are generally 50%-90% less than that of branded medicines’ prices which are available in the open market but have the same quality as that of expensive branded medicines. For ensuring the quality of the products, all the medicines are procured from WHO GMP certified suppliers only. Each batch of drug after its receipt at the warehouses is independently tested at laboratories accredited by ‘National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories’ (NABL) for ensuring best quality and only after satisfaction, the medicines are sent to Kendra’s for sale. The product basket of PMBJP is very well equipped and comprise 1800+ medicines and 285+ surgical devices covering all major therapeutic groups such as Cardiovascular, Anticancers, Anti-diabetics, Anti-infectives, Anti-allergic, Gastrointestinal medicines, Nutraceuticals, etc.
This scheme also provides a good source of self-employment with sustainable and regular earnings. Many steps are being taken to popularize the use of generic medicines in India by the government, hence sales are increasing on regular basis thus giving more income to the entrepreneurs.
1. The Scheme provides incentive to the Kendra owners up to Rs. 5.00 lakh which is given @ 15% of monthly purchases made, subject to a ceiling of Rs. 15,000/- per month.
