Rahul Gandhi’s arrest against the spirit of democracy: Minister Vivek Venkatswamy
Hyderabad, July 21: Minister for Labour, Employment, Training, Factories, Mines and Geology, Dr G. Vivek Venkatswamy, condemnee the arrest of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. He said that arresting him for standing in support of protesting students is against the spirit of democracy.
The Minister said that the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to express dissent peacefully in a democratic society.
Suppressing the voices of students when they raise genuine concerns for the resolution of their issues is not appropriate, he said.
Dr Vivek stated that governments should listen to students’ concerns and work towards addressing their grievances instead of curbing their democratic rights. He strongly condemned the arrest of Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders who expressed solidarity with the students’ protest.
The Minister said that safeguarding the right to freedom of expression and peaceful protest is the responsibility of every democratic government. He reiterated that the Congress Party will always stand by students in protecting their rights and upholding democratic values.
