Rahul Gandhi’s Arrest Against the Spirit of Democracy: Minister Dr G Vivek Venkatswamy
Hyderabad, July 21: Telangana Minister for Labour, Employment, Training & Factories and Mines & Geology, Dr G Vivek Venkatswamy, strongly condemned the arrest of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, stating that detaining him for standing in support of protesting students is against the spirit of democracy.
The Minister said that the Constitution of India guarantees every citizen the right to express dissent peacefully in a democratic society. He added that suppressing the voices of students when they raise genuine concerns over their issues is neither appropriate nor democratic.
Dr Vivek Venkatswamy said governments should listen to the concerns of students and work towards resolving their grievances instead of curbing their democratic rights. He also condemned the arrest of Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders who expressed solidarity with the students’ protest.
Emphasising that protecting the right to freedom of expression and peaceful protest is the responsibility of every democratic government, the Minister reiterated that the Congress Party will continue to stand with students in safeguarding their rights and upholding democratic values.
