Govt Announces PJR Awards, Extends Support to Gig Workers’ Families on May Day

Hyderabad, May 1: Labour, Employment and Mines Minister G. Vivek Venkatswamy announced that the state government will institute the ‘P. Janardhan Reddy Lifetime Achievement Awards’ to honour individuals for their outstanding contributions to the labour sector. These awards will be presented annually on the occasion of May Day.

The initiative has been taken in recognition of the lifelong struggle of P. Janardhan Reddy, who dedicated his political career to fighting for the rights of workers, labourers, and underprivileged sections of society.

Acting on a representation submitted by former MLC Ramulu Nayak, the government has directed the Labour Commissioner to frame guidelines and eligibility criteria for selecting awardees. The Minister stated that the awards will be conferred starting from May Day next year.

Shrama Shakti Awards Presented

On the occasion, the Minister presented the ‘Shrama Shakti Awards’ to trade union leaders, workers, and management representatives. The awards recognised organisations that have effectively implemented labour laws and promoted workers’ welfare, as well as individuals who have made notable contributions to labour rights.

More than 100 recipients were honoured with the Shrama Shakti Awards and expressed their gratitude to the Minister and the state government.

Financial Assistance to Gig Workers’ Families

Fulfilling the assurance given by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, the Minister extended financial assistance to the families of two gig workers who lost their lives while on duty.

A cheque of ₹5 lakh each was handed over to the families of delivery personnel Garlapati Shashidhar Reddy and Dharavath Mahesh.

The Minister also appreciated the efforts of Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union leader Shaik Salauddin for actively pursuing the issue and ensuring justice for the affected families.
